The school of biological sciences sits within the faculty of life sciences at the university and is ranked in the UK top 10 (QS World University Rankings by subject 2023).

The school of biological sciences is passionate about sustainability and preserving biodiversity; this is evident in the education they deliver to their students, the research endeavours they are championing and the actions and decision they make as a school with regards to all elements of our operation.

The school of biological sciences is interested in exploring, trialling and evaluating how different offsetting providers operate and measuring the efficacy with which they are capturing and avoiding carbon emissions whilst maximising for other beneficial metrics such as increases in biodiversity. As part of this process the school of biological sciences is purchasing some wilder carbon units with the hope to trialling and evaluating and carbon offset that is not for profit and focusses on enhancing biodiversity.

The university of Bristol has pledged to become a net zero carbon campus which means making significant and rapid changes to reduce carbon emissions to the lowest amount – and offsetting as a last resort! We’ve set a target to reach net zero scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions from our buildings by 2030, and are committed to getting scope 3 emissions to net zero as soon as possible. The school of biological sciences is interested in exploring, trialling and evaluating how different offsetting providers operate and measuring the efficacy with which they are capturing and avoiding carbon emissions whilst maximising for other beneficial metrics such as increases in biodiversity.

As part of this process the school of biological sciences is purchasing some wilder carbon units with the hope to trialling and evaluating and carbon offset that is not for profit and focusses on enhancing biodiversity. As the trial is for the purpose of learning more about carbon offsetting rather than for carbon accounting purposes the carbon units will not be deducted from any reports detailing the universities carbon reporting.
