Renowned Research and Teaching Institute

Founded in 1989, the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) is an internationally renowned teaching and research institute based in the UK at the University of Kent.

Our mission is to conserve biodiversity and the ecological processes that support life on Earth, by developing capacity and improving conservation management and policy through high-impact research.

DICE was created in response to the ongoing global environmental crisis and to help achieve the goals and targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity. From the start, we recognised that conservation issues mostly stem from people’s actions and choices, and this guides us in three main ways. First, all our work is inherently interdisciplinary, combining the natural and social sciences to understand conservation issues in the round and better inform policy and practice. Second, we collaborate with a range of partners and stakeholders to ensure that our work is relevant and inclusive. Third, we focus on teaching, training and outreach that inspires new generations of conservationists to develop solutions that account for both local and global contexts.

Sharing Space for Nature

E3 Sharing Space for Nature is a five-year research initiative, funded by Research England.

Sharing Space for Nature was designed to help inform progress towards the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework Target 3, which commit every country to nearly double the area of land and sea managed for nature to 30% by 2030. Achieving this will require a radical shift in how we imagine, design and implement successful and inclusive conservation solutions in multifunctional landscapes and seascapes.

The Sharing Space for Nature programme is based at the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) and supported through Research England’s Expanding Excellence in England (E3) fund. This project includes funding to purchase carbon units to offset carbon emissions, as part of achieving the UK Net Zero target.
